Sanitary Sewer

The sanitary sewer transports waste water from residences (e.g., sinks, toilets, and baths) and businesses to the City's San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. It is then treated physically and biologically before being reused as reclaimed water or discharged into the Bay watershed.
  • We maintain the sanitary sewer system located within the City streets.
  • We quickly respond to sewer blockages and spills 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Our crews usually respond within 30 minutes to ensure maximum spill containment and to ensure that hazardous wastewater does not enter the storm drains or surface water.
  • If you suspect that there might be a sewer spill or smell a bad odor, please call us immediately at (408) 794-1900.
  • The longer sewer problems go unresolved, the more serious the problems.
  • We will investigate reports of a leaking or spilled sanitary sewer at no charge to the caller.
  • If the problem is within the City sewer main, all work needed to clear, restore service, and clean up any spills will be performed at no charge to the resident.

Storm Drain

Transports untreated storm runoff into a nearby creek or other waterway.
Stormwater deposited into a creek will flow into the San Francisco Bay without being treated. Because of this lack of treatment, it is of critical importance that the City be notified as soon as possible should you suspect any chemical or sanitary sewer spillage into the storm system.

Stormwater Runoff
We are responsible for the maintenance of the storm sewer system to ensure both the quality and quantity of storm water runoff.

Storm Response
We respond to calls on storm related issues. Typical calls include:
  • Localized flooding.
  • Missing, broken or displaced manhole covers or grates.
  • Downed trees or tree limbs

Please note that this service is limited to infrastructure in the public right-of-way. Issues on private property remain the responsibility of the property owner.

Inlet Program
We inspect and clean out all storm drain inlets within the public right-of-way throughout the city once per year. This aids in the safe passage of runoff to the storm sewer system and intercepts pollutants that would otherwise reach our creeks and the bay.

Street Sweeping
Street sweeping has proven to be effective in collecting both larger debris that could block storm drains and in capturing pollutants from our street.

Sandbag Information
  • Sandbags are supplied through the Santa Clara Valley Water District
  • We assist the district and residents by maintaining several distribution facilities at our yards.
  • Sometimes, the facilities are stocked with only empty burlap bags and loose sand so you may need to fill the sandbags.
