Wellness Rewards Program
Wellness is a way of living-eating a healthful diet, being physically active and managing one’s well-being. The everyday choices we make can help us live healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives—both at work and at home. Studies show workplace wellness programs reduce health-care costs, reduce absenteeism and turnover, and improve employee health and well-being.
Wellness Program FAQs
Wellness Program Enrollment Form
The City of San José strives to provide employees with a positive, educational, and supportive environment, which provides a framework allowing individuals to live healthy, happy, and productive lives at work and in their private life at home. We encourage employees to take advantage of our wellness program and its resources.
There are four commonly accepted determinants of good health:
Access to appropriate utilization of quality healthcare services
Good health can be preserved. And compromised or declining health can be improved through the appropriate application of wellness information, services and products.
Healthy Lifestyle Choices
By emphasizing healthy lifestyle choices, providing information on a variety of topics, and offering a range of services designed to meet the employee’s wellness needs, we strive to foster a work environment where employees are empowered to achieve their maximum level of wellness and engagement.

True physical health is the result of regular exercise, good nutrition, and sufficient rest for physical recovery. Achieving optimal health, and staying healthy, is an on-going and challenging process. Wellness program activities are in place to help you obtain physical health throughout every stage. Programs and services range from traditional Western medical practices to alternative medicine, and from prevention to chronic disease management.
Our offerings include weight management and nutrition; exercise; smoking cessation; ergonomic safety at work; diabetes management; and more.
Stress, psychological functioning, life-cycle changes, and other factors greatly influence our overall well-being and ability to participate in regular, routine life and work activities. Good mental health is demonstrated by individuals who are capable of dealing with normal levels of stress, are able to maintain fulfilling relationships, lead an independent life, and manage to recover from difficult circumstances.
For those individuals who may struggle with mental health challenges, our wellness support includes classroom seminars on stress management for home or work; clinical support for coping with lifecycle changes; work-site interpersonal communication courses; telephonic or face-to-face counseling and more.
The screening provides participants with rapid results of the following important tests and calculations:
Blood Pressure (BP)
Body Mass Index (BMI)
HDL (the good cholesterol)
LDL (the bad cholesterol)
Objectives of the Wellness Screenings
Wellness Screenings are a convenient and cost-effective way for employers to help individuals monitor their current health status and offer support and encouragement for individuals to stay healthy or get healthy.
Research shows that individuals who routinely monitor these wellness indicators generally seek treatment sooner to improve their long-term health, and this often leads to lower health care costs both for the employee and the employer.
Here's what employees are saying about the Wellness Screenings:
"The Wellness program helps me put my health concerns back on the right track again. I'm eating a better diet and exercising now. Thanks!"
"I'm very happy that this benefit is offered; it's so convenient and useful."
"Because of my screening I went to see my primary care physician. My wellness check-up was definitely a catalyst in getting me to think more about my health."
"I appreciate being able to schedule a screening at a time and location that works for me."
"The staff was very friendly and informative."
"It was a life changing experience!"
The available of work-site fitness rooms builds on our organization’s mission to support healthful employee activity and to help achieve a wellness-focused workplace culture. The fitness rooms are designed to offer stretching, weight bearing and cardio equipment in a convenient on-site location.
Fitness rooms are in operation at City Hall, the West Yard, the South Yard, the Mabury Yard, the Central Service Yard, the Police Department, and at many Fire Stations. Originally put in place to support public safety personnel and field maintenance workers whose jobs required them to maintain or improve their physical strength, the fitness rooms have spread in popularity to include use by employees who spend the majority of their work day sitting at a computer.
City Employees have access to free work-site flu vaccinations annually during the months of October and November during Open Enrollment. Look out for the flyer for clinic locations and times each Fall.

The employees of the City of San Jose have been providing blood to the local community since 1990. The American Red Cross brings their mobile blood collection team to our City Hall campus three times a year; typically the drives occur during the months of March, June and September. Blood donation volunteers receive a free mini physical, which includes a blood pressure check and a test to determine current iron levels in the blood. E-mail Human Resources at
for more information.
